Lift Engineering
at the
University of Northampton

University of Northampton

The courses in Lift Engineering at University of Northampton aim at a broad based engineering education closely linked to the needs of the lift industry, and providing a sequence of educational courses providing for lifelong learning during a career in lift technology.

The University acknowledges the support of the European Social Fund (ESF), and is proud of its educational partnership with the UK Lift Industry through the Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA). LEIA provides one of our lift engineering courses and is closely associated with our other provision, providing both support and technical expertise through its member companies.

The Division of Engineering

The course are delivered alongside the other engineering provision, in the Division of Engineering. The division comprises some 42 academic staff responsible for approximately 650 (Full Time Equivalent) students. The disciplines embraced within the division include Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Architecture, and Product Design.

Since 1983, the division has enjoyed a strong association with the lift industry through partnership with the Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA). Through LEIA, links have been created between subject experts within the division and current professional practitioners in the industry, ensuring that, at every stage, the course material is both relevant and up to date with current practice.

Three programmes of study in Lift Engineering are available. Each programme is modular and is studied entirely by distance learning :

The LEIA Distance Learning Course leads to the award of:

BTEC Professional Development Certificate in Engineering
(Lift and Escalator Technology)

Lift and Escalator Industry Association
This study programme forms the foundation of the lift engineering courses taught through the University, and provides a grounding in all the main aspects of lift engineering, from an appreciation of what constitutes a lift, through the basic principles and procedures for maintenance and service, to an elementary study of the design principles.

Prepared with funding support from the European Social Fund (ESF), and with the support of LEIA, University of Northampton provides a course leading to the award of

Foundation Degree in Lift Engineering

European Social Fund

The Foundation Degree is a study of mechanical and electrical science, together with mathematics and other engineering studies related to lift engineering.

For advanced study, the University provides a postgraduate level course, leading to the award of

MSc in Lift Engineering

University of Northampton
The MSc is a study of the advanced principles and philosophy underlying Lift Engineering, and covers specific aspects such as Lift Systems Engineering, Codes and Standards, Contract Management, culminating in a research study and dissertation on an aspect of Lift Technology or Management of the student's choice.
